Privacy Policy

Effective date: April 16, 2026 · Last updated: April 16, 2026

Handiy (“Handiy”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates handiybook.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use our website, how we use it, who we share it with, and what rights you have over it. We comply with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and, where applicable, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If you have questions or want to exercise your privacy rights, contact us at hello@handiybook.com.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Diagnostic session data

When you use our symptom diagnostic tool, we record the following for the purpose of improving our guide recommendations and understanding the most common appliance issues:

  • Appliance type (e.g. “washing machine”)
  • Symptom or issue label selected during the diagnostic flow
  • Full selection path through the diagnostic tree
  • Slugs of guides shown as results
  • Optionally, if you choose to share: appliance brand, model number, and approximate year of manufacture
  • A temporary session identifier stored in your browser’s sessionStorage (cleared when you close the tab)
  • A one-way hashed version of your IP address (SHA-256 with a server-side salt). We never store your raw IP address.

1.2 Photo scan data

If you use our Photo Scan feature, the image you submit is compressed in your browser and sent to Anthropic’s API for analysis. The image is used solely to identify the error code, part, or model sticker in the photo. Handiy does not permanently store your photos. We store only the prediction result (identified text, appliance type, confidence score) and whether you confirmed the result was correct, linked to an anonymous prediction ID.

1.3 Account data (Pro Portal users)

If you create a Pro Portal account, we collect your email address, organisation name, and any property information you add. This is stored in our Supabase database and is used exclusively to operate your account.

1.4 Technical data

Our hosting provider (Vercel) automatically collects standard server logs including request URLs, timestamps, and response codes. These logs are retained per Vercel’s standard policy and are not linked to individual user profiles by us.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To improve the accuracy and relevance of our repair guides and diagnostic recommendations
  • To understand which appliance types and symptoms are most commonly reported
  • To improve the photo identification model through anonymised feedback signals
  • To operate and secure our services (rate limiting, fraud prevention)
  • To provide and manage Pro Portal accounts
  • To respond to your inquiries and support requests

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for targeted advertising.

3. Who We Share Information With

We share data only with the service providers necessary to operate Handiy:

AnthropicAI guide generation, photo analysisUSA
UpstashRate limiting (Redis)USA
VercelWeb hosting and CDNGlobal edge network

We may also disclose information where required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of Handiy and its users.

4. Cookies and Local Storage

We use the following browser storage mechanisms:

  • Authentication cookies (Supabase): Set when you log in to the Pro Portal. These are strictly necessary for the service to function. They expire when your session ends or after 7 days.
  • sessionStorage: We store a temporary anonymous session ID in your browser's sessionStorage during a diagnostic session. This is automatically deleted when you close the tab or browser window. It is never synced to a server in a way that could identify you.

We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies.

5. Data Retention

  • Diagnostic sessions: Retained indefinitely in aggregated form to improve our service. Individual records contain no directly identifying information (IP is hashed, no name or email).
  • Photo scan predictions: Prediction results (not images) retained indefinitely. Images are not stored.
  • Pro Portal accounts: Retained for the lifetime of your account. Deleted within 30 days of a verified deletion request.

6. Your Rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request that inaccurate data be corrected.
  • Deletion: Request that your personal data be deleted (subject to legal retention requirements).
  • Portability: Request your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Objection / Opt-out: Object to certain processing activities.

Because diagnostic session data is not linked to your name or email, we cannot identify individual diagnostic sessions without additional information you provide. To make a data request, email hello@handiybook.com with the subject “Privacy Request”. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Children

Handiy is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. International Transfers

Handiy is operated from Canada. Our service providers (Supabase, Anthropic, Vercel) process data in the United States. By using Handiy, you consent to this transfer. We ensure our providers maintain appropriate safeguards consistent with PIPEDA and, where applicable, GDPR Standard Contractual Clauses.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page with a revised effective date. For material changes, we will notify Pro Portal users by email. Continued use of Handiy after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
